Effect of the Computational Model and Mesh Strategy on the Springback Prediction of the Sandwich Material

Abstract: The effect of the computational model and mesh strategy on the springback prediction of the thin sandwich material made of micro-alloyed steel was investigated in this paper. To verify the chosen computational strategy, a comparison of the experimentally obtained specimen (U-bending) with the FEA result was performed. The Vegter yield criterion combined both with the isotropic and kinematic hardening law was used for the calculation. In addition, the effect of the deformation mesh element (surface and volume) … Show more

“…Springback evaluation was conducted in three planes, and the simulation outcomes were compared with the experimental ones [ 24 ]. Solfronk et al [ 25 ] studied the effect of various numerical parameters on the springback prediction of sandwich material. Their results suggest that the use of volume elements does not significantly improve springback prediction, but computational time increases greatly.…”

“…Cold forming leads to plastic deformations, residual stresses initiation and changes in wall thickness. The spring-back effect [7,8] is occurring, when the forming tool is opened. It leads to a change in the shape of the part.…”

“…A great number of calculation parameters in finite element simulations effects the accuracy and the solution time of the simulation [5,6]. Mesh design of the geometries and plasticity modeling steps dominates the accuracy of the simulations [7][8][9]. Mesh design generally includes element type, element number, and number of integration points (for shell elements).…”
