The success of artificial insemination in chickens is very dependent on sperm quality. Sperm temperature and diluent during storage can affect sperm quality. This study evaluated the quality of Bangkok chicken sperm diluted with 5% glucose and NaCl stored at 5 ⁰C and 26 ⁰C. The research design used was completely randomized. The data obtained were analyzed using a variance. The results showed that the motility of sperm preserved for 9 hours at 26 ⁰C with infused NaCl and Glucose 5% differed significantly (P< 0.05) with motility of 50±0.0% and 34±8.94%, respectively. While preservation under 5 ⁰C for 9 hours with NaCl, better than Glucose 5% (P<0.05) with motility of 58.00±10.95% and 38.00±10.95%, respectively. The viability of sperm preserved at 26 ⁰C with glucose 5% extender was better than NaCl (P<0.05) with a value of 58.93±1.27% and 33.43±1.27%, respectively. While preservation at 5 ⁰C of viabilities of sperm under Glucose 10% and NaCl were not significantly different (P>0.05) from values of 52.57±5.15% and 48.14±8.09%, respectively. The abnormality of sperm stored at 26 ⁰C and 5 ⁰C for 9 hours with NaCl and Glucose 5% were not different (P>0.05). Insemination using 100 million sperm with infused NaCl extender from 18 eggs produced 94.44% (n=17) fertility and 72.22% (n=13) hatchability. While insemination using infuse glucose 5% extender, 11 eggs produced 63.64% (n=7) fertility and 54.54% (n=6) hatchability. The infusing NaCl extender produced better sperm quality, fertility, and hatchability than glucose 5% at 5 ⁰C.

Poultry industry is rapidly increasing worldwide and India is seen as a prominent market for both chicken broiler and chicken egg production. There are number of states in India, especially from its southern part which play an important role in increasing countries GDP from the poultry industry however, the scenario is still very gloomy from Leh-Ladakh region. Ladakh comes under high-altitude region which is around 3500 meter above mean sea level, characterized by harsh environment i.e. low oxygen, low atmospheric pressure, low temperature, high wind velocity followed by extreme winter. This stressful condition hinders the health and productivity of poultry chicken. The purpose of the present review is to overview the overall reproduction and productive phenomenon of hen and challenges of poultry farming at high-altitude. Emphasis is given on how the production performance of chicken can further be increased at such stressful environmental condition which will be very helpful to the local progressive farmers interested in poultry backyard farming in this region in future.

The purpose of this study was to determine the motility and viability of kampung rooster (Gallus gallus domesticus) spermatozoa in 0.9% Sodium chloride (NaCl) solution as an extender with the addition of egg yolk at different concentrations at cool temperature (5°C). This study was performed using two 1.5 years old healthy local roosters. Semen was collected through massage in the morning. The pooled semen sample was divided into four treatment groups. In the T0 group the semen was diluted in 0.9% NaCl, while in the T1, T2 and T3 groups the semen was diluted in 0.9% NaCl added with 5, 10 and 15% egg yolk. The results showed that the motility and viability of spermatozoa decreased when stored at cool temperatures for ten hours (p <0.05). Semen of roosters stored at 5°C in saline solution without the addition of egg yolks showed the lowest motility and viability of spermatozoa (p <0.05). The addition of egg yolk into the saline extender increased the motility and viability of spermatozoa. Concentration of 15% egg yolk in saline solution resulted in the highest spermatozoa motility and viability when stored for up to 8 hours (p <0.05). However, motility and viability of spermatozoa at 10 hours of storage were not significantly different (p >0.05) with the addition of 10% and 15% egg yolks. Therefore, it could be concluded that the addition of 15% egg yolk into a saline solution as an extender could maintain the motility and viability of kampung rooster spermatozoa when stored at 5°C for 10 hours.
