“…High 3␤-HSD expression and activity enhance androstenone metabolism and thereby decrease the accumulation of androstenone in adipose tissue. Nicolau-Solano and Doran [34] showed that in vitro 3␤-HSD protein expression in primary porcine hepatocytes increased upon treatment with androstenone and estrone sulfate. This effect was observed in hepatocytes isolated from heavier pigs (90 kg) and only in a limited range of androstenone and estrone sulfate concentrations.…”

“…In a study using porcine hepatocytes isolated from intact male pigs weighing 70 and 92 kg, different response patterns to steroid treatment depending on weight were discovered. In low-weight pigs, estrone sulfate produced no effect on 3β-HSD protein expression, whereas a significant induction was present in the hepatocytes from heavy-weight pigs [52]. Similarly, androstenone produced an increase in protein expression in heavy-weight pigs, whereas it had no effect on low-weight pigs.…”

“…Glucocorticoids are known to stimulate 3b-HSD expression in human adrenocortical NCI-H295R cells (Feltus et al 2002), but reduce 3b-HSD expression and activity in rat Leydig cells (Xiao et al 2010). Androgens are reported to inhibit 3b-HSD expression in Leydig cells (Stalvey & Clavey 1992;Heggland et al 1997) and adrenal fasciculata cells (Perry & Stalvey 1992), but enhance 3b-HSD protein expression in primary cultured pig hepatocytes in a concentration-dependent manner (Nicolau-Solano & Doran 2008). However, the majority of studies have been carried out on the 3b-HSD gene regulation in steroidogenic tissues in humans or rodents; little is known about the transcriptional regulation of the 3b-HSD gene in porcine liver.…”
