Effect of surface modification of sisal fibers on water absorption and mechanical properties of polyaniline composite

Abstract: This article presents the surface modification of sisal (Agave sisalana) fibers by alkalization to tune up mechanical limitations of natural fibers‐reinforced polymer composites associated with poor fiber‐polymer matrix compatibility. Upon surface treatment, the fibers were surface coated with polyaniline through in situ oxidative polymerization to further enhance resistance to water absorption by introducing hydrophobic polymer backbone. Based on the results from spectroscopic and microscopic analyses, surfac… Show more

“…Polyaniline-deposited cotton fiber immersed in chloroform and deionized water (as control) is exposed to Mesdan Autowash with a speed of 40 rpm at 60°C for 90 minutes wash time. e concentration of extracted polyaniline was then analyzed using Perki-nElmer Lambda 9 UV-Visible spectrophotometer in the wavelength region of 200-800 nm [25].…”

“…Ten grams of SF was soaked in 0.2 M HCl solution. One hundred and fifty milliliters of 0.5 M aqueous aniline solution was added to the flask containing acidified fiber on stirring for 30 min to homogenize the system; after that, 150 mL of equimolar FeCl 3 .6H 2 O solution was added to the mixture dropwise to initiate oxidative polymerization on continous stirring . The polymerization process was set for 12 h at room temperature.…”

“…The composite once coated with silane showed better mechanical characteristics and improved water absorption resistance. Deposition of Polyaniline, a conductive and non-toxic polymer over the sisal fibre surface created a barrier for water and hence the mechanical properties get increased [8]. The hybridization of FRP composites improvised the water absorption limit whereas the polymer matrix reinforced with natural fibre made a loss in tensile strength to 27% and tensile modulus from 15 to 35% on immersed in water for a period of one month [9].…”
