Effect of supplementation of dietary protected lipids on intake and nutrient utilization in Deccani lambs

Abstract: Four complete isonitrogenous (crude protein 13%) rations with 0 (T1), 5 (T2), 10 (T3) and 15 (T4) per cent calcium soap from red palm oil (protected fat) were formulated and evaluated using four Deccani lambs (19.32 +/- 0.82 kg) in a completely randomized design at the end of a growth trial. The average daily dry matter intake (% body weight or g/kg W0.75 per day) in lambs fed ration T4 was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than in those fed rations T1, T2, and T3. There was no significant difference in the diges… Show more

“…Calcium soaps of CO were more digestible compared with SO and PO ( Table 3 ). Several studies have mentioned that the use of calcium soaps does not have any adverse effect on dry matter digestibility [ 34 , 35 ]. Although dietary treatments in this study had similar chemical composition, it may be possible that the fiber contents (NDF and ADF) from SO and PO affected fibrolytic bacteria.…”

“…The procedure to make calcium soap was conducted by heating a mixed liquid of NaOH and soybean oil using a hotplate (set at 180 o C) and stirred at 800 rpm until the NaOH and soybean oil were perfectly dissolved. Some CaCl 2 liquid (2.35 g crystal CaCl 2 and 4.7 mL of distilled water) was added in the mixture and stirred slowly to produce soybean oil calcium soap (Kumar et al, 2006) The research treatment was started by adapting Bali cattle with the stall and its ration for 14 d, until they consumed their ration in a constant amount. Before the cattle were treated with the rations, they were weighed to determine their initial weight and then repeated every month for four months.…”

“…The sesame oil, canola oil, and flaxseed oil were produced by MH Farm Bogor Company, Golden Bridge, and Green Tosca, respectively. Calcium soap from these three kinds of vegetable oils was made according to the method by Kumar et al (2006). The main ingredients for calcium soap were NaOH (to hydrolize the fatty acids of vegetable oil) and CaCl 2 .…”
