Effect of substrate on the structure and optical properties of ZnO nanorods

Abstract: Crystalline ZnO nanorods have been grown on various substrates by a low cost aqueous chemical growth technique. The effect of substrates on the properties of ZnO nanorods has been investigated systematically. The nanorods deposited on silicon are observed to be structurally and optically different from that grown on GaN. Due to a higher rate of nucleation on the silicon substrate, the surface density of nucleation centres is very high. As a result, we get randomly oriented nanorods on the silicon substrate. Ar… Show more

“…Due to a small lattice mismatch, almost perfectly vertically aligned ZnO nanowire arrays can be grown on GaN (n-type [48] and p-type [145][146][147][148][149]), AlN, SiC, Al 2 O 3 , and MgAl 2 O 4 substrates [150], either by hydrothermal decomposition [151] or electrodeposition. In particular, ZnO and GaN have the same wurtzite-type structure with a low lattice mismatch of 1.8% [152], which is much smaller than that (12.7%) with Au(111).…”

“…It is also noted that a lower concentration increases the aspect ratio. rods consists of two peaks, one in the UV range and the other in the visible wavelength region [8]. The narrower PL peak at 377 nm is associated with the near bandgap emission, while the broader peak at 580 nm is associated with point defects.…”

“…On the other hand, it was found that, due to higher rate of nucleation on the Si substrate, the surface density of nucleation centres was very high [26] and incompatibility of the lattice structure between the cubic Si substrate and the hexagonal ZnO. As a result, this led to formation of less-aligned ZnO NWs and randomly oriented on the Si substrate [27]. Moreover, the Si surface readily got oxidized during the nucleation stage of the ZnO growth process via thermal evaporation method, in which these oxides were an amorphous film without crystal orientation [43].…”
