Effect of Streblus Asper Leaf Extract on Selected Anaerobic Bacteria

Abstract: The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the antibacterial effects of leaf extract of koi (Streblus asper) against six anaerobic bacteria: Porphyromonas gingivalis W50, Prevotella intermedia, Actinomyces naeslundii (T14V), Peptostreptococcus micros, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans ATCC 43717 and ATCC 43718. The dried-pulverized leaves were extracted using 50% (v/v) redistilled ethanol. Employing the disc diffusion method, it was demonstrated that 15 µL of the leaf extract at 250 and 500 mg/mL h… Show more

“…The antimicrobial activities of LG and LG mouthrinse were determined by disc diffusion method (Taweechaisupapong et al . ). Hundred microliter of the tested bacteria suspension containing 10 6 CFU ml −1 of bacteria cells was spread on the surface of solid agar plates of each strain by sterile cotton swaps.…”

“…Recently, our team demonstrated that SAE possessed antibacterial activity towards endodontic and periodontal pathogens (Taweechaisupapong et al, 2000a(Taweechaisupapong et al, , 2002a. Moreover, mouthwashes containing SAE also measurably improved gingival health (Taweechaisupapong et al, 2002b).…”

“…From our previous studies, we found that SAE possessed antibacterial activity towards caries associated bacteria (Taweechaisupapong et al, 2000b;Wongkham et al, 2001), endodontic and periodontal pathogens (Taweechaisupapong et al, 2000a(Taweechaisupapong et al, , 2002a. Mouthrinse containing SAE also has a clinically measurable effect on gingival health (Taweechaisupapong et al, 2002b).…”

“…Recently, we have sequentially reported the in vitro and in vivo antibacterial action of Streblus asper leaf extract (SAE) on Streptococcus mutans (Taweechaisupapong et al, Wongkham et al, 2001), endodontic and periodontal pathogens (Taweechaisupapong et al, 2000a(Taweechaisupapong et al, , 2002a. Relatedly, mouthrinse containing SAE has a clinically measurable benefit on gingival health (Taweechaisupapong et al, 2002b).…”
