Effect of storage duration on egg quality, embryo mortality and hatchability in FUNAAB‐ɑ chickens

Abstract: Effect of extended storage on egg quality, embryo mortality and hatchability in FUNAAB‐ɑ chickens was determined. Hatchable eggs (n = 288; weighing 53.2 ± 4.67 g) collected from a flock of FUNAAB‐ɑ layer breeder hens aged 32 weeks were stored in egg tray with broad end up under 16 ± 1.5°C for either 0, 4, 8, 12, 16 or 20 d. Before incubation, eight eggs from each group were evaluated for internal and external quality traits. Remaining eggs were set in an incubator and transferred into hatcher on embryonic day … Show more

“…It is well known that prolonging the post-oviposition storage of eggs negatively affect egg hatchability in chickens ( Tona et al, 2003 ; Petek and Dikmen, 2006 ; Hamidu et al, 2011 ; Khan et al, 2014 ; Addo et al, 2018 ; Abioja et al, 2021 ). This is corroborated by the findings of the present study.…”

“…Storage for 3, 6, 9, and 12 d yielded hatchability of fertile eggs of 67, 45, 42, and 36%, respectively. Reduction of hatchability may be attributed to loss of quality in yolk and albumen ( King'ori, 2011 ; Addo et al, 2018 ; Abioja et al, 2021 ). Quality of albumen is of utmost importance in the development of chicken embryo.…”

“…Efforts to upgrade the Nigerian local chickens have yielded the Funaab Alpha breed by crossbreeding the indigenous stock with exotic over the years. This breed of chicken combines the hardiness of indigenous chickens with the productivity of exotic and according to Abioja et al (2020), Funaab alpha chickens are well adapted to prevailing conditions of the humid tropics and have effective thermoregulation capacity. The reproductive potential of cocks is mostly in uenced by their semen quality (Isidahomen 2013) and the higher genetic diversity between chicken breeds in terms of their semen quality and output (Sonseeda et al 2013;Ameen et al 2014;Getachew, 2016) necessitate the need to compare the semen characteristics of different breeds to identify the reproductive merit of any cocks (Peter 2004).…”
