Effect of STATCOM on the low-voltage-ride-through capability of Type-D wind turbine generator

Abstract: Variable speed wind turbine with full scale converter or so-called Type-D wind turbine generator worldwide installation has been significantly increased in the last few years. Voltage sag in the grid side may cause the wind turbine to be disconnected from the grid. In this paper, effect of STATCOM on the low voltage ride through capability of Type-D wind turbine during voltage sag in the grid side is studied. Simulation is carried out using MATLAB/Simulink software. Results show that STATCOM can significantly … Show more

“…In order to overcome some of the crowbar problems, a method using a chopper to regulate the DFIG DC link was proposed in [14,15]; however, it resulted in a circulation of high current in the rotor side converter (RSC) during utility disturbances. Shunt capacitors and STATCOMs have been proposed to enhance LVRT [16][17][18][19], but they cannot effectively deal with unsymmetrical faults. In [19], an LVRT enhancement strategy using DVR is proposed in [19], yet it suffers from increased control complexity and mathematical calculations.…”

“…Therefore, grid codes have been established in many countries to comply with the new requirements. Since voltage fluctuation is a common power quality problem in power systems, most of studies are focused on the performance of WTGs during voltage sag [5][6][7]. Although it is a less power quality problem, voltage swell may also lead to the disconnection of WTGs from the grid.…”

“…Furthermore, the growing development of RES has led to a change in the requirements of reactive power support services [33]. STATCOM is demanded to support reactive power continuously during asymmetrical grid faults in order to control grid voltages and to enhance fault ride-through capability of RES [34]- [35]. In addition, delta-connected STATCOM exhibited several characteristics compared to conventional two-level converters, and the reactive power control strategies proposed in [14]- [16] are not suitable in this case.…”
