Nowadays, degraded soils reclamation e.g., sodic soils is the main target for Egypt Government to face the great gap between food production and consumption. The high exchangeable sodium on soil colloids is a plant stress factor due to its role in reducing soil aggregates. To face this challenges, two field experiments were carried out aiming at evaluating the impact of soil amendments as main plots i.e. sugar lime mud and agricultural gypsum, and foliar application of potassium silicate at different rates [0.0 (control), 750 and 1500 mg L -1 K2SiO3] as sub-plots on wheat plants grown on soil having ESP value of 15.9%. Both soil amendments improved sodic soil properties, where the superior amendment was gypsum followed by sugar lime mud compared to untreated soil, and this improvement reflected on plant performance. The rate of 1500 mg L -1 K2SiO3 possessed the best performance, while the rate of 750 mg L -1 K2SiO3 came in the second-order and lately control treatment. Generally, the best performance of wheat plants grown under sodicity condition was realized when plants were treated with gypsum and potassium silicate at rate of 1500 mg L -1 , while the lowest performance was recorded when plants were not treated (without soil and foliar applications). The studied materials enhanced the synthesis of chlorophyll in wheat plant tissues, and this may be the reason for increasing the ability to tolerate sodicity. Also, sugar lime mud has a great opportunity to be included in the fertilization programs for degraded soil especially from an economic point of view.

There are many problems in the field of agriculture to improve the sustainability of farmed products. Increasing the production costs are one of these problems. In order to investigate the effects of silicate under varying nitrogen and potassium fertilizer levels on perennial sweet pepper plants cultivated in a greenhouses for two consecutive years of (2018/2019 and 2019/2020) by maintaining a balance between vegetative and fruit growth. The experiments were conducted in four greenhouses; the area of each greenhouse was 240 m 2 . Each experiment included 12 treatments, three potassium silicate concentrations (0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 g l -1 ) under four combined treatments of NK ( 25, 50, 100, 125% ) of the recommended dose. Nitrogen doses were 47.5, 71.25, 95.0 and 118.75 kg N fed-1 added via irrigation water while K doses were 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 and 1.25 g as K2O doses, which was added by spraying on the leaves of sweet pepper plants (Marvel F1). The results showed that sweet pepper plants fertilized with NK fertilizers at 125 % with potassium silicate at concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 g l -1 achieved the highest significant increases in mean values of total leaf area plant -1 compared to untreated plants in both seasons. In addition, increasing levels of NK fertilizers from 50 to 125% of the recommended dose led to increases in relative fruit yield. Furthermore, the results showed that the addition of 0.5 g l -1 of potassium silicate to sweet pepper plants led to a significant increase in the total yield and average fruit weight.

Effect of Planting Distance on the Mechanical Harvesting of Hot Pepper

Hot peppers are well known for being spicy and also have a high nutrient content. Human resources have formerly been used to harvest hot peppers; however, a high level of musculoskeletal risk to the human workforce has been reported. Therefore, to reduce the risk to farmers and replace the human workforce, the mechanical harvesting of hot pepper and steps to improve the harvesting efficiency of farmers were conducted. To achieve this, the effect of planting distance on the mechanical harvesting of hot peppers was analyzed at three planting distances (30, 40, and 50 cm) with several cultivars. Subsequently, machine-harvested hot peppers were classified into five groups (marketable, damaged, lost, unharvested, and twigged hot pepper), depending on their postharvest status. The average weight ratio of each group was then calculated, after which statistical analyses were conducted. The effect of planting distance on mechanical harvesting was then analyzed by comparing the differences between each group’s average weight ratio and the total weight of hot pepper, which was simultaneously harvested mechanically at each planting distance. Results showed that the average weight ratio of marketable, unharvested, and twigged hot pepper improved as the planting distance increased. However, no effect on the average weight ratio of damaged and lost hot pepper was observed. The highest yield of marketable hot pepper was found at a planting distance of 40 cm, and the average weight ratio to the whole was lower than at 50 cm of planting distance. Thus, the most suitable planting distance for mechanical harvesting was 40 cm.
