Compaction before and during planting can restrict root growth (Boone et al, 1978;Van Loon and Bouma, 1978;Bengough and Young, 1993;Van Oijen et al, 1995;Stalham et al, 2007, Ragassi et al, 2012Huntenburg et al, 2021). Stalham et al (2007) reported that soil compaction delayed emergence, reduced rooting density and deep rooting, reduced rate of leaf appearance and ground cover expansion, shortened canopy cover duration, and restricted light interception, which consequently reduced tuber yield, particularly where compaction was shallow.…”
