Sucralfate, a sulphated polysaccharide, which inhibits gastric pepsin has been used to treat gastric ulcer in a double-blind controlled clinical trial. One and a half grams of the compound were given three times each day, one hour before meals, for one month and change in the ulcer size was followed radiologically. Twenty-eight patients completed the trial with satisfactory data. We were unable to show conclusively that Sucralfate was effective in healing gastric ulcer, although there appeared to be an advantage in favour of the treated group.
