Effect of Single Administration of Coffee on Pupil Size and Ocular Wavefront Aberration Measurements in Healthy Subjects

Abstract: No study has so far evaluated the impact of coffee drinking on ocular wavefront aberration (OWA) measurements. This study presents novel findings regarding the OWA of the eye following coffee intake. We aimed to evaluate the acute changes in pupil size and OWA of the eye after single administration of coffee. A total of 30 otherwise healthy participants were included in this prospective study. All subjects drank a cup of coffee containing 57 mg caffeine. Measurements of pupil size, total coma (TC), total trefo… Show more

“…Future research into the relationship between fatigue and PNS activation could use both HRV and pupillometry indices of SNS and PNS activation, and assess both the effects of task-evoked and daily-life fatigue [ 63 ]. Furthermore, the processes driving the PLR may be even more complex, as recent work in the fields of neuroscience and psychology has shown it to be affected by visual attention and higher-level processing [ 73 ].…”

“…All participants visited the lab for a two-hour experiment. Participants were asked not to drink coffee on the same day before the experiment, as the effect of caffeine on the pupil response remains unclear [ 62 , 63 ]. The NfR was completed by the participant shortly after he or she had arrived.…”

“…In our study, we also instructed our study subjects to abstain from alcohol, caffeine and nicotine for a period of at least four hours prior to testing. Minimal data is available on which to base potential duration of effect of these agents on pupil function, though there is data to suggest that caffeine effects on pupil function begin to resolve by four hours (30,31), nicotine effects within 20 minutes (32), and alcohol with effects on pupil size that resolve with signs of intoxication (33). In alert subjects, dark-adapted pupil size has been shown to have minimal day-to-day variability, without the need to control for sleep, diet or activity levels (34), and remains stable for up to six months in individuals up to 47 years of age (35,36).…”

“…The effects of coffee on IOP, 9 choroidal thickness, 10 pupillary response, 11 ocular perfusion, 5 and macular degeneration 12 have been widely assessed in previous studies, however no study so far has investigated the association of coffee intake with AL, ACD, AD, and LT. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential acute changes in the ocular biometric measurements after ingestion of a cup of coffee.…”
