Effect of Silver Particle-longkong Peel Extract Coating on Postharvest Decay and Browning in Longkong Fruit

Abstract: We aimed to assess the effect of longkong peel extract (LPE)-silver particle-alginate coating on the postharvest decay and browning of longkong fruit during storage at 13°C and 90-95% relative humidity (RH). Longkong was coated with 0, 0.45 or 0.90 mg•L −1 LPE in silver particle-alginate solution and then stored at 13°C and 90-95% RH for nine days. In the mixture consisting of the longkong peel extract and silver solution, the silver particle size was modified to yield fine particles. Electron micrography show… Show more

“…The objective of this research was to obtain a biodegradable, antibacterial material that can be used as packaging for soft cheese (usually with a shelf life of 4 days at 4-8 • C). The literature presents a couple of alginate-base films, with Ag NPs, used as packaging for meat [55,56] or vegetables [57], but none for cheese. In addition, to the best of our knowledge, here we report for the first time the obtaining of the alginate-Ag NPs-LGO system.…”

“…Daily life applications : Interestingly, based on the range of colors achievable by metal–phenolic complexes using different polyphenols and metals, an MPN provides a facile inking strategy for applications such as writing and printing and an environmentally friendly hair dyeing process for natural gray hair . Additionally, by taking advantage of the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of MPNs, an edible MPN coating can be acquired to prolong the postharvest shelf life of fruits. , …”

“…71 Additionally, by taking advantage of the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of MPNs, an edible MPN coating can be acquired to prolong the postharvest shelf life of fruits. 39,72 Regrettably, despite the various fascinating advantages of MPN coatings, their extreme instability in acidic solutions limits their widespread application to a large extent. Significantly, we introduced the concept of cross-linking protection imparted by silane reagents to the MPN, successfully enhancing its stability and improving its performance as a protective membrane against corrosion.…”

“…Despite the fact that the addition of PLE increased the water vapor permeability of the pectin/chitosan composite film due to the increased concentration of polar groups, the composite coating outperformed the control film against bacteria. Moreover, alginate combined with 0.45 mg.L −1 longkong peel extract (LPE)-silver particles coating prevented severe browning, weight loss, and decay incidence during storage of longkong fruit during storage at 13°C and 90-95% RH by limiting the growth of fruit browning mostly via decreasing peroxidase (POD) and PPO activity [64].…”
