Effect of Silanization Time on the Surface Modification of Anhydrous Borax

Abstract: The silanization process to alter the surface properties of anhydrous borax powders was investigated using an organosilane of 3-(Trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate. Silanization treatments were carried out in anhydrous toluene at constant reaction temperature and silane loading. For optimizing the surface coating in the silanization processes, different processing periods (1, 6, 12, and 24 hours) were attempted. The surface-treated powders were characterized by solubility and wettability tests.

“…Most of those glycans are immobilized on either antibodies or cell surfaces, which restrict their conformation and facilitate specific antibody-antigen interactions (36). Alternative chemical methods to site-specifically functionalize carbohydrates for immobilization on surfaces are time-consuming and involve tedious protection/deprotection steps of hydroxy groups (37,38), thus the use of Shoda's reagent is a promising and simple alternative. Amino-modified beads are commercially available and other QCM/SPR sensor surfaces made of quartz or borosilicate glass can be aminofunctionalized with aminated silanes (39)(40)(41).…”

“…Silanization of BONPs was carried out with the silane coupling agents (MPTMS, VS). 24 1.5 ml MPTMS or VS was directly dropped into the 20 ml anhydrous toluene in a 100 ml three-neck flask. 0.5 g BONPs and 1% (v/v) CTAB were added into the silane-doped toluene solution.…”

“…According to the principles of interface coupling, the hydrophilic entities can be changed to hydrophobic ones by reducing the amount of hydroxyl groups on the surface. Those -OH groups are expected to chemically react with various organic surface-modifying substances such as fatty acids and their derivatives, surfactants, resins, various organometallic compounds, titanate, and silane coupling agents (Yusoff et al 2010;Akpınar and Arsoy 2020).…”
