Effect of several modifiers on the mechanical and tribological properties of phenol formaldehyde resin

Abstract: The N-polyamide 6 (N-PA6) was used as a toughening agent to improve the mechanical properties of a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin. Then, molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2) and graphite (Gr) were added as friction modifiers to improve the tribological properties of PF resin-N-PA6 composite. In this article, it was found that PF resin with 2 wt% N-PA6 has the best performance in tensile strength (41.9 MPa) and notched Izod impact strength (3.7 kJ/m 2). When MoS 2 or Gr was added, tensile strength was red… Show more

“…In a study conducted by Khalid et al [35], the MOR of oil palm frond composite panels was decreased due to excessive glue spread rates. The application of phenol formaldehyde resin is usually limited due to brittleness and the relatively high friction coefficient [42]. As a higher glue spread rate was applied, an excessive glueline was formed as a thick and brittle layer which resulted in a reduction in the MOR of the composite panel.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, although investigations on PF based hybrid composites have been conducted so far by several researchers, evidences of the overall effect conferred by microsize copper, molybdenum disulphide and graphite incorporation on physico-mechanical of PF based composite in any previous study are relatively scarce [22][23][24][25][26]. The mixture of PF, binders and fillers has been pulverized for 45 min to have a better dispersion of the fillers into PF and other binders.…”

“…Phenol formaldehyde (PF) resins are a type of thermosets that is widespread because of their low cost, ease of processing, excellent wetting properties with reinforcements, weathering resistance, dimensional stability, thermal resistance, chemical resistance, and mechanical properties. 33 However, it still suffers from the brittleness and oxidation risks because of their special methylene–phenolic structure. 34 Thus, many researchers are now trying to find good solutions to enhance the mechanical and thermal properties of PF resin.…”
