Effect of Screen-Based Computer Simulation on Knowledge and Skill in Nursing Students’ Learning of Preoperative and Postoperative Care Management

Abstract: Screen-based computer simulations are considered a method of skill teaching in health education. This study examined the effect of screen-based computer simulation on knowledge, skill, and the clinical decision-making process in teaching preoperative and postoperative care management to second-year students in an undergraduate school of nursing. It is a randomized controlled study. The study sample was composed of 82 students. They received education in screen-based computer simulation (n = 41) and skill labor… Show more

“…Only one recent study was located that compared face-to-face and Web-based simulation strategies. A randomized trial of teaching preoperative and postoperative care management to second-year nursing students (n ¼ 82) was conducted using screenbased simulation or laboratory skills teaching (Durmaz et al, 2012). No difference was found in students' posteducation knowledge or clinical decision making, indicating that both teaching strategies were suitable.…”

“…In nursing, e-simulation accessed via the worldwide Web has been found to have a significant impact in teaching the fundamentals of nursing (Mosalanejad, Shahsavari, Sobhanian, & Dastpak, 2012), preoperative and postoperative care (Durmaz, Dicle, Cakan, & Cakir, 2012), and recognition and management of a critically ill patient (Tait, Tait, Thornton, & Edwards, 2008). Overall, it is clear that simulation programs benefit clinical education, but consideration should also be given to the feasibility of the various simulation approaches.…”

“…In such studies, there had been some positive results in the learning of nursing interventions (Durmaz et al, 2012;Jeffries et al, 2003;Kiegaldie & White, 2006;Tatti & Lehmann, 2001) and observing physiological skills (Botsis et al, 2011). In this study, the computer simulation program provided positive learning outcomes concerning students' knowledge, and the change in that knowledge.…”

“…A computer simulation program is a learning method offering students an opportunity to experience some of the elements of real situations prior to encounters with patients (Jeffries, Woolf, & Linde, 2003). These programs allow nursing students to actively engage in and control their learning (Durmaz, Dicle, Cakan, & Cakir, 2012;Kiegaldie & White, 2006). Previously, computer simulation programs have produced positive learning outcomes, for example in learning about nursing interventions (Durmaz et al, 2012;Jeffries et al, 2003;Kiegaldie & White, 2006;Tatti & Lehmann, 2001) and observing physiological systems (Botsis, Halkiotis, & Kourlaba, 2011).…”
