Effect of Saturation on Field Oriented Control of the New Designed Reluctance Synchronous Motor

Abstract: In this paper the effect of saturation on torque production of a reluctance synchronous motor (RSM), which was originally built as an induction motor (IM), is investigated. The rotor was replaced with new one, designed as synchronous reluctance cageless rotor with barriers, the shape and number of which were optimized to maximize the reluctance ratio. The torque measurement was done while the RSM was fed by frequency converter controlled by a microcontroller with closed loop field oriented control strategy to … Show more

“…The number of squirrel-cage bars of the reference motors is the same, 42 bars. Therefore, considering the number of squirrel-cage bars, the number of barriers is designed to be three [8]. The detail specifications of the reference motors are shown in Table 1.…”

“…Induction motors (IMs) account for 70% of industrial motors because of their simple structure and low manufacture cost [1][2][3]. However, IMs have the secondary copper loss that limits the improvement in their efficiency [7][8][9][10]. Therefore, to replace IMs, new types of motor are being studied to improve the efficiency such as line-start synchronous reluctance motors (LS-SynRMs).…”

“…The shape of arrowed rotor bars with a middle ring is also often found [10,11]. The rotor slots can be open, semi-closed, or fully closed [12][13][14]. The variability of the rotors, in general, makes the identification of failures difficult and is quite insufficient in multi-series production of cast rotors.…”

“…With various types of motors, the three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor (SCIM) is the most used, because of its simple structure, line-start ability, robustness, and low manufacturing cost. However, it is evident that the induction motor (IM) does not meet high efficiency due to rotor copper loss [4][5][6]. Due to a global trend on improving the efficiency of electric motors, there is ongoing research that focuses on this area.…”
