A Study on the Rotor Design of Line Start Synchronous Reluctance Motor for IE4 Efficiency and Improving Power Factor

Abstract: As international regulations of motor efficiency are strengthened, the line-start synchronous reluctance motor (LS-SynRM) is being studied to improve the efficiency of the electrical motor in industrial applications. However, in industrial applications, the power factor is also an important performance index, but the LS-SynRM has poor power factor due to the saliency characteristic. In this paper, the rotor design of LS-SynRM is performed to improve the efficiency and power factor. First, the barrier design is… Show more

“…Due to the rise in responsiveness towards upcoming sustainable development, as enjoined by international energy regulations, electric motor technologies for agriculture, irrigation systems, and industrial applications are endlessly under investigation for additional enhancements as far as the performance and main costs are concerned. The three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor (SCIM) is the most used in agriculture irrigation systems and industrial applications because of its simple structure, line-start ability, robustness, and low manufacturing cost [1]- [3]. However, the threephase SCIM has finite efficiency due to secondary copper loss and, therefore, several research efforts have been made to refine its efficiency [1].…”

“…This effect can be calculated by assuming a constant angle of stator current with respect to the direct axis of the rotor and then rotating the rotor and measuring torque. Figure 1 shows the result of this experiment for a six-kilowatt reluctance synchronous machine of an axially laminated anisotropic (ALA) type using the stator of an induction machine of 36 slots [34]. Ripple peak-to-peak torque is about 10 N.m, while the torque is calculated from the nonlinear model of this machine in the angle of current of 36.4 N.m.…”
