Effect of Resin Luting Systems and Alumina Particle Air Abrasion on Bond Strength to Zirconia

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different primer/resin luting agent combinations and alumina air abrasion on the adhesion to zirconia. Eighty blocks (4×4×3 mm) of Lava Frame Zirconia (3M ESPE) were produced and randomly assigned into eight groups (n=10) according to two zirconia surface treatments (untreated or air abrasion with 50-μm alumina particles) and four luting systems (SU: Scotchbond Universal/RelyX Unicem 2; ZP: Z-Prime Plus/Duo-link Universal; MB: Monobond Plus/Variolink II; and AP: Alloy… Show more

“…Zirconia surface can be treated either by micromechanical process or by chemical modification of the surface or a combination of both (7). The abrasion with aluminum oxide particles at different sizes ranged from 50-125 µm is considered and proved as an efficient treatment of zirconia surface before their delivery (8). A process involves attacking the surface with AL 2 O 3 particles at different distance and pressure to create surface roughness and increase irregularity for better resin cement interlocking (9,10).…”

“… 16 21 24 Also, different variables such as surface conditioning methods and aging procedures of zirconia were found to influence the bond strength of resin cements with regard to MDP content. 15 16 17 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 However, the existing literature in connection with the effects of multiple firings on the bond strength of different types of resin cement is lacking.…”

“…According to a previous study, suprastructures exposed to the loss of retention were at a higher risk of a technical or biological failure 4) . However, the difficulty in zirconia bonding [5][6][7] , limited bond area for Ti-alloy base and short (3-4 mm) abutment, and poor retention form of some angled abutments make it hard for traditional cements (e.g., zinc oxide cement/glass ionomer cement/resin-modified glass ionomer) to provide an adequate retention force in these inevitable cases (Fig. 1).…”
