Effect of removable orthodontic appliances on oral colonisation by mutans streptococci in children

Abstract: Little is known about the effect of removable orthodontic appliances on oral colonisation by mutans streptococci (MS). In the present study, the frequency of isolation and serotype distribution of MS were evaluated in two groups of children, one undergoing therapy with removable appliances and the other not subjected to any kind of orthodontic treatment, respectively. Streptococci isolated from dental plaque samples from both groups of children were identified as mutans streptococci on the basis of their morph… Show more

“…Placement of orthodontic appliances in a healthy oral cavity can induce a continuous accumulation of dental plaque, 1 alter the normal oral microbiota, 2,3 cause lesions in the buccal mucosa, 4 exacerbate periodontal disease, and consequently cause infection. 5 It is known that ulceration in the buccal mucosa is one of the most frequent complaints of patients because of the friction between bracket and mucosa, which causes discomfort for the patient.…”

“…Henceforth, future public health model should be oriented more toward family and also further developed so as to include more contemporary methods for public dental health education, as suggested in recent studies (29,30). Both fixed and removable orthodontic appliances register increase in bacterial microflora associated with early stages of caries caused by poor dental hygiene (31,32). But, in the case of students with orthodontic history, the children's concern for their teeth probably contributed to the lower caries experience (33).…”
