Effect of Reactive Diluents and Kaolin on the Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Resin

Abstract: Epoxy resin was modified using phenyl diglycidyl ether (PGE), xylene and kaolin. The impact strength (IS), critical stress intensity factor (K), flexural strength and glass transition temperature (Tg) were evaluated as functions of the modifier content. It was found that the addition of diluents led to a significant reduction of both viscosity and Tg. A three-fold increase of IS was obtained with the addition of 2.5% PGE. Moreover, the addition of 15% PGE resulted in about 145% enhancement of the KC parameter.… Show more

“…Lowering viscosity of epoxy by adding a (reactive) diluent could lead to the formation of well‐dispersed nanoparticles in the resin, thereby easing its processability. Between several classifications of diluents, the ones based on epoxides can enter the epoxy network via a chemically reaction and can therefore render optimal influences on both properties and processing of the resin mixtures in addition to causing less harm to the environment . As an example, researchers examined viscosity of epoxy using three kinds of epoxy resins and reactive diluents.…”

“…An important advantage of hybrid materials is a unique combination of mechanisms for properties improvement which may lead to synergistic effect unrealizable with traditional composites with one modifier (Bakar et al 2014;Szymanska et al 2017). Due to the ease of processing and fairly good physical properties, there is an increasing interest in using not only thermoplastics but also thermosetting plastics as matrix for composite materials (Kucharczyk et al 2013;Bakar et al 2010, Szymanska et al 2017.…”
