Effect of pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone mimic, on egg hatch, nymph development, adult emergence and reproduction of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama

Abstract: Application of pyriproxyfen at 64 microg mL(-1) resulted in greater inhibition of egg hatch and suppression of adult emergence compared with lower rates. Pyriproxyfen also markedly reduced female fecundity and egg viability for adults that were exposed either as fifth instars or as newly emerged adults. The ovicidal, larvicidal and reproductive effects against ACP suggest that pyriproxyfen is suitable for integration into an IPM program for ACP.

“…Reduced fecundity due to pyriproxyfen was also observed in T. tabaci (Liu 2003). Boina et al (2009) observed that in D. citri, pyriproxyfen treatment of newly emerged adults did not produce acute lethal effects as observed in present study but resulted into reduced fecundity and egg viability as found in the present study. Varloud and Hodgkins (2015) studied the effects of combined formulation of dinotefuron, pyriproxyfen, and permethrin (DPP) against cat flea Ctenocephalides felis and brown dog ticks Rhiphicephalus sanguineus and demonstrated that DPP was highly effective against adult ticks and fleas.…”

“…Larval mortality was observed both in first and second instar stage of the treated groups in a dosedependent manner showing the sensitivity of the young larvae to pyriproxyfen. Larvicidal properties of pyriproxyfen is well documented in literature against a wide range of pests including mosquitoes and citrus butterfly (Invest and Lucas 2008;Alejandro et al 2009;Boina et al 2009;Mojaver and Bandani 2010;Singh and Kumar 2011;Emilia et al 2014).…”

“…D. citri maintained on plants treated with an aqueous solution of imidacloprid (0.1 AI ng/μL) exhibited reduced fertility, fecundity, and nymph survival as compared with controls (Boina et al 2009). Sublethal effects on D. citri have also been observed with pyriproxyfen, buprofezin, and diflubenzuron, which caused reduced development of eggs, nymphs, and adults (Boina et al 2010;Tiwari et al 2012). The minimum concentration of sulfoxaflor required to reduce the development of D. citri was found to be lower than the minimum concentrations of other insecticides required to reduce its development (Brar et al 2017).…”

“…Some insecticides, such as cyantraniliprole (Tiwari and Stelinski 2013), imidacloprid (Boina et al 2010), and flupyradifurone , reduced feeding by D. citri. It is important to reduce its feeding given that D. citri acquires and transmits the Candidatus Liberibacter sp.…”
