Effect of Prostaglandins on in vitro Oocyte Final Maturation (GVBD) and Ovulation in the Longchin Goby Chasmichthys dolichognathus

Abstract: Perhaps the most common type of reproductive dysfunction in captive fish is failure of females to undergo final oocyte maturation and thus to ovulate and spawn. The success of aquaculture could therefore be improved by developing techniques to enhance natural spawning, artificial maturation, and/or to induce ovulation in farmed fish. This study aimed to investigate the effects of prostaglandin E 2 (PGE 2 ) and prostaglandin F 2α (PGF 2α ) on in vitro oocyte maturation (germinal vesicle breakdown, GVBD) and ovu… Show more

“…Our previous studies demonstrated that PGE2 (50 ng/mL) significantly induced GVBD of matured oocytes (at the migratory nucleus stage) in vitro in the longchin goby, C. dolichognathus (Kim & Baek, 2017). In this study, we focused on the effects of PGs on ovulation and 17α20βP production by oocytes in vitro .…”

“…Our previous studies reported that PGE2 possibly plays important roles in final oocyte maturation (GVBD) in vitro in the longchin goby, C. dolichognathus (Kim & Baek, 2017). This study focused on the effects of prostaglandins on 17α20βP production in vitro during the ovulation process in the longchin goby.…”

“…Prostaglandins (PGs) also display some MIH activities, which explains why their precursor arachidonic acid (ARA) is of primary importance in the quality of fish reproduction. Through 13 in vitro tests, PGF2 alpha and PGE2 have recently been shown to induce FOM in a wide range of teleost fish species (Skoblina and Minin 2016;Kim et al 2017;Takahashi et al 2018). However, similar to the case for T, doses in the range of µg/ml are sometimes necessary to provoke FOM in vitro (Skoblina and Minin 2016), which raises the question of whether the effect on FOM is direct or indirect.…”
