Effect of prohydrojasmon on total phenolic content, anthocyanin accumulation and antioxidant activity in komatsuna and lettuce

Abstract: Prohydrojasmon has been reported to improve the quality of crops. However, most previous studies have investigated its application on fruits. Here, we evaluated the effect of prohydrojasmon on the growth and total phenolic content, anthocyanin content, and antioxidant activity in komatsuna (Brassica rapa var. periviridis) and lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). Prohydrojasmon did not show any serious inhibitory effect. Prohydrojasmon applied to komatsuna at a concentration of 0.5 µM significantly increased the total … Show more

“…Anthocyanins possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer, antiobesity, and cardioprotective effects [13]. Cyanidin, one of the anthocyanins, has a flavone skeleton with glucoside and is widely distributed in several vegetables and fruits, red leaf lettuce, black soybean, blackberries, and grapes [14,15]. Several kinds of cyanidin have been reported to have chemotherapeutic activities in humans.…”

“…Prohydrojasmon, which is a synthetic JA derivative, has been used as a bio-stimulant to increase anthocyanin accumulation in crops [27]. Although PDJ is commercially available as a plant growth regulator useful for enhancing the coloration of various fruits, such as apple and grape, its mechanism of action has not been comprehensively characterized.…”

“…Specifically, it has been applied to enhance mango and red pear fruit coloration [25,26]. In our study, lettuce and komatsuna grown under artificial light were treated with several PDJ concentrations, which enhanced the production of some phenolics, polyphenols, and anthocyanins in lettuce leaves [27]. However, the precise mechanisms underlying PDJ-induced phenolic production in red leaf lettuce remain unclear.…”

“…PDJ also induces defense responses against common armyworm in corn (Mandour et al, 2013). Effects of PDJ on phenolic compounds, anthocyanin accumulation, and antioxidant activity in komatsuna and lettuce were reported (Azis et al, 2020). We previously reported that PDJ is a growth regulator that prevents shoot and root growth in both indica and japonica rice cultivars (Chiba & Morino, 2018;Morino et al, 2020).…”
