Objective. Based on a retrospective case-control study, this study aims to explore the effect of holistic nursing in operating room based on PDCA (plan, do, check, and action) process and evidence-based nursing (EBN) in a ear, nose, and throat operating room. Methods. About 200 patients who underwent otorhinolaryngology surgery in our hospital from January 2019 to September 2021 were enrolled. According to the difference of nursing mode, patients were assigned into a control group and study group; holistic nursing in operating room was included in control group, and holistic nursing in the operating room based on PDCA and EBN was included in study group. Nursing satisfaction, hypothermia, chills, restlessness, related indexes of operating room, nursing quality scores of operating room, and individual quality control scores were compared. Results. First of all, we compared the nursing satisfaction, the study group was very satisfied in 69 cases, satisfactory in 30 cases, general in 1 case, the satisfaction rate was 100.00%, while in the control group, 46 cases were very satisfied, 34 cases were satisfied, 13 cases were general, and 7 cases were dissatisfied, the satisfaction rate was 93.00%. The nursing satisfaction of the study group was higher compared to the control group ( P < 0.05 ). Second, we compared the incidence of hypothermia, chills and restlessness. The incidence of hypothermia, chills, and restlessness in the study group was lower compared to the control group ( P < 0.05 ). The time of tracheal tube extubation, PACU stay time, postoperative hospitalization time, hospitalization cost, and operation time in the study group was significantly lower compared to the control group ( P < 0.05 ). In terms of the scores of nursing quality in the operating room, the instruments and equipment management, equipment preparation, nurses’ cooperation skills, disinfection and isolation quality, and total score in the study group were higher compared to the control group ( P < 0.05 ). Finally, we compared the scores of individual quality control examination. The scores of ward management, rescue, therapeutic articles, drug management, first-level nursing, nursing documents, and head nurse management in the study group were higher compared to the control group ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. Incorporating the concepts of PDCA and EBN into the overall care of the operating theatre is effective for patients in the ENT operating theatre. Our results show that this care can be effective in improving patients’ surgical indicators, reducing the incidence of postoperative infections, shortening postoperative resuscitation and length of stay, reducing hospital costs, and promoting surgical patient satisfaction. While further multicenter studies are necessary, this series of nursing interventions remains worthy of replication in the clinical setting.

Qualitative determination of occupational risks among operating room nurses

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the occupational risks faced by operating room nurses, their working conditions and health problems, and the protective measures adopted.Background: Since operating rooms are high-risk environments, the nurses working in them are exposed to correspondingly greater health risks.Method: This qualitative descriptive study design involved 17 operating room nurses and was performed in a public hospital in Turkey. Data were collected by the author during face-to-face interviews using a semi-structured form constructed on the basis of the study aims. Theme establishment continued until new data emerged from the analysis of all interviews. Data were then subjected to qualitative content analysis.Results: Three main themes were determined in the study, worker safety, working conditions, and training. At interview, operating room nurses reported being exposed to several occupational risks, including radiation, sharp implements, long working hours, and working standing up. They also reported experiencing, or were anxious about encountering in the future, various health problems associated with these risks. They also identified activities associated with education and protective measures as inadequate. Discussion and conclusion:Several occupational risk factors in the operating room environment adversely affect the health of nurses working in the unit. We recommend that standards aimed at protecting against occupational risks be applied on a regular basis in order to preserve the personal health and safety of operating room staff. Implication for nursing and health policy:Nurses are responsible for the constant care of their patients under all conditions and environments but may face the risk of compromise of their own health as a result. Training, certification, and nursing policies aimed at protecting the health of employees in clinical settings should be implemented. What is already known about the topic?Operating room nurses are known to experience severe health problems arising from their working environment. Many nurses have to cope or live with these health problems. What this paper adds:The study reveals the need for operating room nursing education programs. It also stresses the importance of legislation and monitoring to ensure a safe working environment for nurses in Turkey.

There are many internal and external factors influence student success such as optimization of student support services, campus resources, teaching methods and learning outcomes achievement, and many others. Understanding student success due to the global declining quality of undergraduate engineering students is very demanding. Post training or re-educating graduates is expensive and time consuming and can be prevented by if structured educational process took a place. The aims of this study were to identify student’s success related factors and assess how a new teaching method will impact student success. Assessment of student success within civil engineering major was analyzed. After conducting the teaching method, a structured reflective questionnaire was carried out among 50 students targeting two modules namely traffic and transportation engineering from level three, and introduction to structural analysis and design from level two. Students’ satisfaction and teaching method effectiveness emerged as significant indictors of student success. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate student responses. Person correlation and Multiple Linear Regression were used to test and predict the relationships between the variables mainly gender, teaching method effectiveness, and overall evaluation. Gender plays a moderate to strong role in the response for method effectiveness indicator and overall evaluation indicators. The performance of Multiple Linear Regression was exceptionally well with very low average relative error (5%). Students are more likely to be engaged onsite rather than online to adjust their need and trigger academic support. Improving student support services, student’s engagement, and update module materials to be more problem based are recommended to ensure students success. In addition, proper student’s feedback analysis, formative and summative assessments were primary tools to improve teaching practices.
