In a geriatric population the administration of Lactobacillus helveticus increases serum calcium [109]; in a prospective double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial the administration of Lactobacillus casei Shirota in 417 elderly patients with a distal radius fracture accelerates the healing process [110].
