Effect of prenylated flavonoids and chalcones isolated from Artocarpus species on platelet aggregation in human whole blood

Abstract: Five prenylflavonoids and two prenylchalcones from Artocarpus lowii King, A. scortechinii King and A. teysmanii Miq., and acetylated derivatives of cycloheterophyllin and artonin E were investigated for their ability to inhibit arachidonic acid (AA), collagen and adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced platelet aggregation in human whole blood by using an electrical impedance method. Among the tested compounds, only cycloheterophyllin inhibited AA-induced platelet aggregation with an IC(50) value of 100.9 microM. … Show more

“…Cycloheterophyllin (C 30 H 30 O 7 ), a prenylflavone (Fig 1A), is isolated from Artocarpus heterophyllus , and has pharmacological and biological functions including anti-inflammatory effects, anti-platelet activities, and antioxidant properties [811]. However, it is unknown whether cycloheterophyllin can modulate the signaling pathways triggered by UVA in human dermal fibroblasts.…”

“…Isobavachalcone is a prenylated chalcone of the flavonoid family, first isolated from PCL in 1968. Isobavachalcone is known to have a wide spectrum of biological activities including anti-viral (Kim et al, 2014), antibacterial (Kuete and Sandjo, 2012), antioxidant (Haraguchi et al, 2002), antiplatelet (Jantan et al, 2010) and estrogenic (Xin et al, 2010) effects. Isobavachalcone has been shown to induce or enhance the apoptosis of cancer cells (Nishimura et al, 2007;Szliszka et al, 2012) and inhibit tumor promotion in an in vivo two-stage mouse skin carcinogenesis test (Akihisa et al, 2006).…”

“…Among them, chalcones represent an important group of natural compounds, which are absorbed in the daily diet and appear to be promising cancer chemopreventive agents (9). Isobavachalcone (IBC), a naturally occurring chalcone compound derived from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia L., has long been used in traditional Chinese medicine as anthelmintic, antibacterial, aphrodisiac, astringent and antiplatelet agent (10)(11)(12). Recently, IBC has also been shown to have anticancer activity (13,14).…”
