Effect of plant sterols and glucomannan on lipids in individuals with and without type II diabetes

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether supplements of plant sterols and/or glucomannan improve lipid profile and cholesterol biosynthesis in mildly hypercholesterolemic type II diabetic and non-diabetic subjects and to compare the response of these two subject groups to the treatments. Design: A randomized, crossover study consisting of four phases of 21 days, with each phase separated by a 28-day washout. Setting: The Mary Emily Clinical Nutrition Research Unit of McGill University. Sub… Show more

“…Two pertinent dietary changes with a high level of compliance could result in substantial cholesterol lowering. There is a limited number of studies in the literature where changes have been made to two discrete cholesterol-lowering components, without significant manipulation of the background diet, and where the effect of each has been quantified separately and as a combination, necessary to establish the extent of synergy between the agents; see, for example, Theuwissen & Mensink (103) and Yoshida et al (107) . In a further study the effects of oats and soya protein were assessed independently and together, but after all subjects had complied with the macronutrient targets of an American Heart Association step 1 diet for 3 weeks (108) .…”

“…Study duration was relatively short and varied between 3 weeks and 3 months. Three studies used plant stanol or sterolsoluble fibre combinations (103,107,112) , of which two determined the effect of the individual components, as well as the combination (103,107) .…”

“…In addition to improving blood lipid profile, glocomanan can also improve glycemic control and cystole blood pressure [13]. And combination of glucomannan and sterol substantially can improve the low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL) as well [15]. Time-point measurement of blood LDLcholesterol LDL-cholesterol were measured using blood serum at day 11 (before the cholesterol diet, cholesterol diet start at day 12), 35 (before diet Amorphophallus, the diet begins day 38), 49, and 63.…”
