Effect of pH on glucose and starch fermentation in batch and sequenced-batch mode with a recently isolated strain of hydrogen-producing Clostridium butyricum CWBI1009

Abstract: The production rates and yields were investigated at 30 °C in a 2.3 l bioreactor operated in 19 batch and sequenced-batch mode using glucose and starch as substrates. In order to study the 20 precise effect of a stable pH on hydrogen production, and the metabolite pathway involved, 21 cultures were conducted with pH controlled at different levels ranging from 4.7 to 7.3 22 (maximum range of 0.15 pH unit around the pH level). For glucose the maximum yield (1.7 23 mol H 2 mol -1 glucose) was measured when the pH… Show more

“…This was in agreement with a study by Masset et al (2010), in which the biogases produced during the first 8 d of anaerobic digestion of sugar (such as glucose) were mainly H 2 and CO 2 . The gas generation rates from all of the MPs were initially high and then gradually declined in our study.…”

“…C. butyricum was conserved and grown with glucose monohydrate at 5 g·L -1 as substrate, in a rich MDT medium [34]. PCA medium in Petri dishes was used for purity check of liquid samples at the end of each culture [34].…”

“…PCA medium in Petri dishes was used for purity check of liquid samples at the end of each culture [34]. All the procedures and media cited above were fully described by Masset et al [34]. The production of hydrogen in different mixing or degassing conditions was investigated in batch BHP tests and in 2.5 L AnSBR.…”
