Effect of peroxisomicine A2and T 544 of the genusKarwinskiaon peroxisomes ofCandida boidinii

Abstract: Dimeric anthracenones have been isolated from toxic plants of the genus Karwinskia (Rhamnaceae). T 514 or peroxisomicine A1 is one of the anthracenonic compounds which produce irreversible and selective damage on the peroxisomes of yeast cells in vivo. In this paper we describe the effect of two structurally related anthracenones on cell viability and on the peroxisomes of the methylotrophic yeast Candida boidinii. As has been described for peroxisomicine A1, peroxisomicine A2 and T 544 caused a decrease in th… Show more

“…These metabolites have been extensively studied in Karwinskia, a genus closely related to Rhamnidium (Hauenschild et al, 2016;Richardson et al, 2004). Some hydroxyanthracenones have been shown to exhibit antimicrobial and antifungal activities (Salazar-Aranda et al, 1998;Salazar et al, 2006) and toxic properties (Bermudez et al, 1986;Martínez et al, 1997;Piñeyro-Lopez and Waksman, 2000;Rojas-Flores et al, 2014). This nding serves as a warning to the Pantanal population who have been using R. elaeocarpum barks for food and therapeutic purposes (Bieski et al, 2012;Bortolotto et al, 2018;Pott and Pott, 1994).…”

Some hydroxyanthracenones, have been shown to exhibit antimicrobial and antifungal activities 84 , 85 and toxic properties 52 , 58 , 86 , 87 . This finding serves as a warning to the Pantanal population who have been using R. elaeocarpum barks for food and therapeutic purposes 29 , 30 , 88 , since the effects of long-term effects on the organism are still unknown.…”
