Effect of Periodic Replacement of the Heteroatom on the Spectroscopic Properties of Indole and Benzofuran Derivatives

Abstract: The electronic structures of a homologous series of indole and benzofuran derivatives, in which the nitrogen or oxygen atom is replaced by group 15 and group 16 heavier heteroatoms, have been investigated by means of various spectroscopic techniques coupled with density functional calculations. It was found that the excitation energies of the group 16 benzoheteroles systematically shift to the red in the order of benzofuran (6), benzothiophene (7), benzoselenophene (8), and benzotellurophene (9). In contrast, … Show more

“…The compounds 10 , 12 , and 14 , which can be regarded as Te/chalcogen-bridged stilbenes, exhibited a trend of increasing λ max (the longest wavelength absorption maxima) upon changing the extra chalcogen atom from O to Se. This trend is in line with the trends observed for related chalcogen-bridged π-conjugated systems, 25 , 26 and is also consistent with the trend of the lowest transition energies, which are largely represented by the HOMO–LUMO (π–π*) transition (see the ESI † for details). Compound 11 , the cross-conjugated isomer of 10 , showed a distinctly shorter λ max .…”

“…In fact, the threedimensional molecular structure of organic-inorganic hybrid molecules can be dramatically changed by the intramolecular metal. 34 This may be a reason why Zn-12 has a strong stimulatory effect on vascular endothelial cell proliferation. Although the chemical forms of Zn-12 accumulated within the cells are unknown, the intracellular accumulation of the zinc complex was almost the same as that of inorganic zinc, suggesting that the mechanisms by which Zn-12 stimulates vascular endothelial cell proliferation contain processes that differ from those by which inorganic zinc stimulates proliferation.…”
