Effect of Oral Glutamine Supplementation on Gut Permeability and Endotoxemia in Patients With Severe Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract: No significant trend was identified for an effect of GL on gut permeability. Decreased inflammation and endotoxemia did not translate into reduced infectious complications in severe acute pancreatitis. However, the study was underpowered to detect the aforementioned difference (trial registration: CTRI/2009/000945).

“…In contrast, patients with AP who received EN did not require glutamine supplementation (65). Finally, oral glutamine supplementation did not seem to confer any significant effect on gut permeability and endotoxemia in severe AP (67). Characteristics of clinical studies on glutamine supplementation included in this review have been summarized in Table 3.…”

“…‐ 10 However, other studies note that although Gln has the above‐mentioned positive tendencies, there is no significant difference compared with the control group; according to the current evidence level, we are still not sure of the exact curative effect of Gln in the treatment of SAP 11 . ‐ 13 Furthermore, the 2013 guideline “Diagnosis and Treatment for Acute Pancreatitis of China” suggested Gln‐enriched nutrition support therapy for patients with SAP, 14 but there was no corresponding provision in the American guideline 15 . Thus, the roles of Gln for SAP comprehensive treatment measures still need further high‐quality RCTs for verification.…”
