This study aimed to identify factors that can affect the retention of glass fiber posts to intra-radicular dentin based on in vitro studies that compared the bond strength (BS) of GFPs cemented with resin cements. Searches were carried out in PubMed and Scopus until December 2013. Bond strength values and variables as type of tooth, presence of endodontic treatment, pretreatment of the post, type of bonding agent (if present), type of cement and mode of cement application were extracted from the 34 included studies. A linear regression model was used to evaluate the influence of these parameters on BS. The presence of endodontic treatment decreased the BS values in 22.7% considering the pooled data (p = 0.013). For regular cement, cleaning the post increased BS when compared to silane application without cleaning (p = 0.032), considering cleaning as ethanol, air abrasion, or phosphoric acid application. Applying the cement around the post and into root canal decreased the resistance compared to only around the post (p = 0.02) or only into root canal (p = 0.041), on the other hand, no difference was found for self-adhesive resin cement for the same comparisons (p = 0.858 and p = 0.067). Endodontic treatment, method of cement application, and post pretreatment are factors that might significantly affect the retention of glass-fiber posts into root canals mainly when cemented with regular resin cement. Self-adhesive resin cements were found to be less technique-sensitive to luting procedures as compared with regular resin cements.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adhesive protocol on the retention of glass-fiber posts luted into root canals. Thirty bovine incisors were endodontically treated and 9-mm-deep post holes were prepared. Fiber posts were luted using one of following protocols (n = 10): SB -Single Bond (3 M ESPE) with regular resin cement RelyX ARC (3 M ESPE); SBMP -Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus (3 M ESPE) associated with RelyX ARC; or UNI -the self-adhesive resin cement RelyX Unicem (3 M ESPE). After cementation, root/post specimens were transversally sectioned into 1-mm-thick slices, which were submitted to push-out testing in a mechanical testing machine. Bond strength data were analyzed by ANOVA (α = 0.05). There was no statistical difference between the adhesive protocols evaluated. Considering that the adhesive protocols evaluated showed similar bond strength values, simpler protocols must be preferable to lute fiber posts to root canal.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess if the curing mode and the etching mode could affect the push-out bond strength of different post cementation systems using two universal adhesives. Materials and methods: A total of 100 single-rooted teeth were divided into Prime & Bond Elect (PBE), Prime & Bond Active (PBA), and Prime & Bond XP (PBXP) as a control. The PBE, PBA, and PBXP were used in the self-etch (SE) and etch and rinse (E&R) mode. Post cementation was performed using Core X flow used in dark-cure and in light-cure. Data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA test and post hoc Bonferroni and Dunnet tests. The Student's t test was performed to find significance between two independent groups. Results: Bond strength was significantly influenced by the adhesive strategies. The PBE and PBA obtained higher values when used in the SE mode (p < 0.001). Light-cured groups obtained significantly higher values (p < 0.001) compared to dark-cured groups. The post space region also had a significant effect on the bond strength; the apical third recorded lower values in all groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The PBA and PBE universal adhesives obtained higher PBS values when used in the SE mode and followed by the light-curing of resin cement. Clinical significance: Universal adhesives represent a good alternative to the conventional total-etch adhesive system for fiber post cementation. Since they perform better in SE, they would be recommendable in clinical practice, as they can be used with a simplified technique.
