Effect of NiSb on the thermoelectric properties of skutterudite CoSb3

Abstract: The phase equilibrium and thermoelectric properties of Co1−xNixSb3 ternary system were examined up to high nickel content x=0.40. NiSb compound with nickel arsenide structure was observed as the impurity phase in the samples with x>0.10 by x-ray diffraction. The sign of the Seebeck coefficient of Co1−xNixSb3 is negative, and the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical resistivity generally decreases with increasing x. The thermal conductivity is reduced in the samples with x⩽0.06, but a… Show more

“…Uher et al [19] confirmed that such a small amount of Ni replacing Co not only raises the electrical conductivity but also lowers the total thermal conductivity. Several publications on thermoelectric properties of Co 4Àx Ni x Sb 12 alloys show this effect [13,17,[20][21][22][23][24][25]. Besides, double filling with elements significantly differing in resonant phonon frequencies such as Ba/Yb [26], Ba/In [27] demonstrated to reduce thermal conductivity and thus enhance the figure of merit [28][29][30][31].…”

“…Reduction of the thermal conductivity has been achieved with unfilled CoSb 3 , by including for instance nanoparticles of CoSb 3 [19,20], FeSb 2 [21], InSb [22], C 60 [23], or ZrO 2 [24]. Nanoprecipitates produced in situ led also to interesting results: Yb 2 O 3 in Yb y Co 4 Sb 12 [25], InSb in In x Ce y Co 4 Sb 12 [26], or FeSb 2 in Co 0.9 Fe 0.1 Sb 3 [27].…”

“…A maximum ZT of 0.37 at 700 K was obtained for the In 0.25 Co 2.5 Fe 1.5 Sb 12 specimen, even though it contained the secondary phase of FeSb 2 . Some results on the effect of a secondary phase on the thermoelectric properties of CoSb 3 have been reported byKatsuyama et al 3,5 Dispersion of the FeSb 2 phase in a Co 1Àx Fe x Sb 3 matrix or the NiSb phase in a Co 1Àx Ni x Sb 3 matrix reduces the lattice thermal conductivity due to phonon scattering, as in…”
