Effect of Nd: YAG laser irradiation on the treatment of oral malodour associated with chronic periodontitis

Abstract: The results confirmed that in the population studied, oral malodour levels were significantly reduced after treating chronic periodontitis. The data indicated a possible adjunctive role for Nd: YAG lasers in periodontal therapy and treatment of oral malodour.

“…Studies demonstrating that periodontitis is associated with intra-oral halitosis are consistent with our finding that improvement of periodontal conditions also results in the reduction of intra-oral halitosis (Miyazaki et al 1995, Morita & Wang 2001, Liu et al 2006, Samnieng et al 2012. The results from Paper III are consistent with other studies demonstrating reductions of VSC levels shortly after non-surgical periodontal therapy (≤4 weeks) (Quirynen et al 1998, Kara et al 2008, Tsai et al 2008, Takeuchi et al 2010. The studies by Tsai et al (2008), andTakeuchi et al (2010) also used mouth rinse and performed a tongue cleaning procedures.…”

“…Based on the full texts, three studies were excluded because they lacked a control group 28 or statistical analyses 29 or they compared Nd:YAG laser treatment to surgical flap treatment 30 . Finally, eight studies 15,31‐37 were identified as eligible and were analyzed further.…”

“…Some reports have suggested that patients perceive laser dental treatment to be better than conventional techniques in terms of postoperative pain and function (24,44,45), and laser palliation of oral ulcers has been well documented in the literature. Colvard & Kuo (18) showed that CO 2 laser treatment relieved pain on application of laser energy, while Convissar & Massoumi‐Sourey (23) found the same results when using Nd:YAG lasers.…”
