Effect of Naringenin on Intracerebroventricular Streptozotocin-Induced Cognitive Deficits in Rat: A Behavioral Analysis

Abstract: Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of streptozotocin (STZ) causes cognitive impairment in rats. The beneficial effect of naringenin (NAR) was investigated on ICV STZ-induced learning, memory, and cognitive impairment in male rats. For this purpose, rats were injected with ICV STZ bilaterally, on days 1 and 3 (3 mg/kg). The STZ-injected rats received NAR (50 mg/kg/day p.o.) starting 1 day pre-surgery for 3 weeks. The learning and memory performance was assessed using passive avoidance paradigm, and for spa… Show more

“…Increase levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) can increase lipid peroxidation and MDA level which lead to neural cell death [21,22]. During oxidation, endogenous and exogenous oxidants react with saturated fatty acids and produce peroxides which destroy myelin sheath, lipids, genetic material and other membrane components [23].…”

“…ICV administration of STZ in rats causes long-term and progressive deficits in learning and cognitive performance that is similar to the sporadic kind of AD (Baluchnejadmojarad, 2009). STZ increases glucose in rats' brain, leads to increase processed amyloid precursor protein to beta-amyloid and intensifies the inflammatory process.…”

“…ICV administration of STZ in rats causes long-term and progressive deficits in learning and cognitive performance that are similar to the sporadic kind of AD (Baluchnejadmojarad, 2009). It appears that this drug can lead to insulin resistance in brain cells, increases glucose in the brain, and reduces the energy available to the cells (Roghani, Baluchnejadmojarad, 2006).…”

“…Spatial memory were tested using a radial arm maze (RAM) according to the paradigm described previously (Bagheri et al, 2011;Baluchnejadmojarad and Roghani, 2006). The apparatus consisted of a 50-cm-elevated (above the floor) eight-armed radial maze (RAM) made of black Plexiglas.…”
