Effect of nano-ZrO2 on microstructure and thermal shock behaviour of Al2O3/SiC composite ceramics used in solar thermal power

Abstract: The Al 2 O 3 -ZrO 2 (3Y)-SiC composite ceramics used in solar thermal power were prepared by micrometric Al 2 O 3 , nano-ZrO 2 and SiC powders under the condition of pressureless sintering. The bulk density and bending strength of samples with 10vol% nano-ZrO 2 sintered at 1480 ℃ were 3.222 g/cm 3 and 160.4 MPa, respectively. The bending strength of samples after 7 times thermal shock tests (quenching from 1000 ℃ to 25 ℃ in air medium) is 132.0 MPa, loss rate of bending strength is only 17%. The effect of nano… Show more

“…One of the ways to improve the TSR is the use of coarse-grained alumina [1][2][3]. The TSR of Al 2 O 3 ceramics can be improved by modelling various composites, for example, modifying Al 2 O 3 with MgO [4] or nano-sized ZrO 2 [5]. It has been reported that needle-like mullite crystals [6] or incorporation of aluminium nitride [7], tungsten carbide [8], titanium carbide [9], or metallic (e.g., iron [10], copper [11], or molybdenum [12]) particles improve the TSR of dense Al 2 O 3 .…”
