Effect of nano-Al2O3 addition on the microstructure and erosion wear of HVOF sprayed NiCrSiB coatings

Abstract: Development of nanostructured high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) coatings with low porosity, high strength and increased wear resistance is still in its infancy. Combining nanoparticles with conventional microscale powders are increasingly being investigated to use with feedstock materials for thermal spray processes. Accordingly, this work investigates the addition of nano-Al 2 O 3 particles on the microstructure and erosion wear of NiCrSiB HVOF coating in a stainless steel (AISI 304) substrate. Particle analysis … Show more

“…As reported, an addition of a small amount of nano-Al 2 O 3 (0.05-0.3 wt.%) into the alkyd-based waterborne coating matrices increased significantly their corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and UV resistance (Ref. 34 ). Moreover, nano-Al 2 O 3 also enhanced hardness without affecting the liquidity, recoating, and brightness of coatings.…”

“…In the case of the thermal spraying coatings, nano-Al 2 O 3 was mixed with spraying materials to increase both hardness and erosion abrasion resistance of HVOF sprayed (Ref. 34 ) or flame-sprayed (Ref. 36 ) NiCrBSi coatings.…”

“…The statistical indices evaluating the performance of the surrogate model showed that both and (responses related to pore size) have a linear relationship with the process parameters as listed in Eqs. [84,85]. A closer to one 2 is also referring to the high quality of the surrogate model being developed.…”

“…However, when a material deviates from the norm and gives rise to a negative Poisson's ratio (− ), such material can be classified auxetic [1][2][3][4][5]. Auxetic behaviour is receiving increasing attention due to its desirable effects such as enhanced shear modulus [6][7][8][9], resistance to impact [10][11][12][13][14], indentation [15][16][17][18], fracture toughness [19][20][21][22], and damping properties [23][24][25]. These performances then translates to applications such as novel fasteners [26,27], foams [28][29][30][31][32][33][34], biomedical implants [35][36][37][38] and actuators [39][40][41].…”
