“…K0, which should theoretically represent the KIc-value of purely monoclinic zirconia, serves here merely as fitting parameter, since pure monoclinic zirconia is non-transformable and has been measured to have a KIc of 2.6 MPaÖm measured by Vickers [55,57], up to 3.7 -6.0 MPaÖm using a short-rod Chevron-notch specimen [58]. The curve fit to all the data obtains KIc,cubic = 3.11 MPaÖm, and KIc,cubic = 2.70 MPaÖm if only fitted to our data, both substantially overestimating the experimentally obtained values by Cutler et al [58], Liu et al [59] and Cui et al [60]. The poor goodness-of-fit seen for the fit to all the data results, on the one hand, due to the high variability in KIc-values among studies for x > 3.0, and the small number of data-points available for x < 2.0 on the other hand (e.g.…”

“…Subsequently, Zhao et al [31] revealed that the damage zone in front of V-notch tip was just superfical and could be easily removed by polishing. In addition, based on the fracture analysis and comparison of the measured values before and after acidic pickling (hydrofluoric acid) as well as annealing for Si3N4 [31], 3Y-TZP [32], Al2O3 [32,33] and 8Y-FSZ [32] ceramics, they further proved that the effect of the physical changes of the material (such as remelting and recrystallization) and the residual thermal stress on the fracture toughness measurement results could be ignored. Our previous researches also excluded the influence of laser processing residual stress [11,26,57].…”

“…Specimens with the size of 3 mm × 4 mm × 50 mm were used to measure the three-point flexural strength (σ f ) and elastic modulus (E f ) with a span of 30 mm and a loading rate of 0.5 mm•min -1 [1,38]. The fracture toughness (K IC ) of the as-prepared samples was measured by the single-edge-notched-beam (SENB) method, the size of the specimens was 4 mm (height) × 2 mm (width) × 35 mm (length) with a span of 15 mm and a loading velocity of 0.5 mm•min -1 , and the notches were incised www.springer.com/journal/40145 in the middle of the samples along the height using a circular saw with a width of 0.3 mm to the depth of 1-1.5 mm [39].…”
