Diabetic neuropathy (DN) is one of the main complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), responsible for a high morbimortality rate and burdening public health resources. Photobiomodulation has proven to be effective in relieving pain, reducing the inflammation, and improving vascularization. We report an evaluation of the effectiveness of photobiomodulation for the relief of pain and to improve the quality of life in patients with diabetic neuropathy. A total of 30 diabetic volunteers with DN were randomly divided into three groups: control, photobiomodulation (PBM), and placebo (P-PBM). Those in Group control were instructed to take diabetic neuropathy medication for 30 days. The PBM group received laser photobiomodulation treatment with the following protocol: three sessions per week for 30 days, totaling 12 applications (wavelength, 808 nm; energy density, 12 J/cm²). in the of following nerves: tibial medial plantar, own plantar digital, common plantar digital, superficial fibular, deep fibular, sciatic, saphenous, and common fibular. Patients in the P-PBM Group were submitted to the PBM protocol, but with the device switched off. Before and after applying the therapeutic protocols, all volunteers were subjected to pain evaluations. The results showed a statistically significant difference between the groups (p < 0.05). The PBM group confirmed an analgesic effect directly related to the use of the photobiomodulation, whilst the patients in group control and P-PBM, did not present significant results. The study demonstrated that laser photobiomodulation is effective in significantly reducing pain and improving the quality of life of patients with diabetic neuropathy.

IntroductionDiabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most common complications of diabetes that strongly impact the patients’ quality of life and working ability. Evidence indicated that low level light therapy (LLLT)/photobiomodulation might be effective for neuropathy. However, the effect of LLLT for DPN is not clear. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to determine the effects and safety of LLLT/photobiomodulation for DPN, in comparison with other methods such as sham light, no treatment, other active treatment and LLLT as an additional treatment compared with another treatment alone.Methods and analysisWe will search eight databases from their inception to the date before the review submission. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) will be included. Two reviewers will independently extract data using a structured data extraction method and assess the risk of bias in the included studies. Data will be synthesised using standardised mean difference or risk ratio with 95% CIs for continuous and dichotomous data, respectively. The primary outcome will be change in pain and secondary outcomes will include global symptom improvement, functional impairment and disability, impairment of sensation, quality of life, nerve conduction, and adverse events. Sensitivity and subgroup analysis will be employed to explore the influence of possible clinical and methodological characteristics. Publication bias will be assessed using funnel plot. We will conduct meta-analysis with RevMan V.5.4 and evaluate quality of the evidence using GRADE approach.Ethics and disseminationThis study does not require ethics approval. Our findings will be disseminated in the peer-reviewed publications.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42021276056.

Many studies have investigated the use of synthetic biomaterials or the use of PBMT to improve the bone repair process. However, there is little evidence on the use of these associated techniques. In view of the above, the present study aimed to carry out a systematic review on the effects of the association of photobiomodulation by low-intensity laser and/or diode-emitting light to biomaterials on bone repair. The present study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, as well as using the terms pre-established by the Cochrane Library Collaboration. Electronic searches were performed in the following databases: PubMed/MEDLINE and Science Direct. The search terms used were "bone repair"; "low-level laser therapy"; "photobiomodulation"; "light emitting diode"; "biomaterials"; "bone substitutes"; "in vivo animal studies". SYRCLE (SYStematic Review Center for Laboratory animal Experimentation) was used to analyze the bias of the studies. A total of 506 studies were found based on the descriptors used, 297 were found in PubMed/MedLine and 209 in Science Direct. Analysis of abstracts and methodology of 108 studies was performed and 86 were excluded. Only 22 studies were considered eligible. At the end of this review, it can be verified that the data presented in recent literature show potential to improve the process of bone repair using PBMT together with several types of biomaterials.
