Effect of mixing on mass transfer characterization in continuous slugs and dispersed droplets in biphasic slug flow microreactors

Abstract: Distribution patterns of transferred solute in slugs and droplets were visualized.• Mass transfer in convection-dominated continuous slugs showed nearlyconstant k L a.• k L a in dispersed droplets decreased with τ under significant diffusion.• Distinct correlations were used for mass transfer predictions in slugs and droplets.• Dispersing the resistance phase into continuous slugs benefits system stability.

“…Over the past few decades, a rapid progress has been achieved in the development of gas–liquid two‐phase flow, especially the slug flow, for its numerous and diverse applications in the chemical reaction, 1–3 gas absorption, 4–6 heat transfer, 7,8 crystallization, 9,10 and so on. Importantly, the gas–liquid slug flow in microdevices greatly promotes the mass transfer efficiency owing to the large specific surface area and circulation flow inside slugs, which has attracted considerable attention in recent years 11,12 .…”

“…2 ). This phenomenon, discussed in Abiev et al [51] , could be due to initial effects during the bubble formation stage (see also the concentration field during this stage from Liu et al [52] ). Since the initial conditions are different in the simulations, as well as the range of Péclet number, the experimental and numerical concentration fields cannot be directly compared.…”
