Effect of Mineral Salts Addition on the Behaviour of an Ethanol Biofilter

Abstract: Ethanol biofiltration was studied in a 0.1651 packed bed reactor filled with sugar cane bagasse complemented with mineral medium and inoculated with Candida utilis. The main objective was to improve the elimination capacity of the system by adding salts to the solid medium. The biofilter was operated for one month, varying both the inlet ethanol concentration (7.6-16.5 g m(-3) and the airflow rate (1.61-2.50 x 10(-3) m3 h(-1)). Removal efficiency (RE) of 100% was attained at ethanol loads ranging from 74.2 to … Show more

“…The alkane degradation was confirmed by measuring the CO 2 release in the headspace of the microcosms, using thermal conductivity detection gas chromatograph (Shimadzu 8A, Champs‐sur‐Marne, France) with a concentric CTR1 column (Alltech). Operating conditions were as reported by Teran Perez et al. (2002).…”

“…The CO 2 concentration contained in the outlet of the biofilter and in the headspaces of the microcosms was measured with thermal conductivity detector gas chromatography (Shimadzu, Duisburg, Germany) using a concentric CTR1 column (Alltech ) . Operating conditions were as already reported (Teran Perez et al , 2002). The production rate of CO 2 was expressed as g per m 3 gas phase per h.…”

“…An important criterion that has not been fully resolved is the importance of the form and concentration of the nitrogen source used in enriching for methylotrophs or supporting their growth and activity in liquid culture or in biofiltration applications. The intermittent addition of nitrogen in a mineral salts mixture has been demonstrated to improve the capacity of biofilters in removing ethanol (Teran Perez et al 2002) and toluene (Prado et al 2002). Addition of greater concentration of nutrients appears to be most important when the biofilter is subjected to high contaminant loading rates (Gribbins and Loehr 1998).…”
