Effect of Mg Addition on the Characterization of γ-α Phase Transformation During Continuous Cooling in Low Carbon Steel

Abstract: The influence of magnesium on the phase transformation and mechanical properties has been investigated by means of dilatometric and microstructural analysis in low carbon microalloyed steel. The thermal simulation experiments were performed on a Gleeble-3800 system equipped with a high-speed deformation dilatometer. The results reveal that, by adding with Mg, the pearlite transformation is delayed, and the pearlite has a scattered distribution even at low cooling rates from 0.1 to 0.5 K/s. It also shows that M… Show more

“…The previous research has discussed the influence of Mg on the phase transformation and mechanical properties. [33] In this study, Zr and Mg were both added into the Al deoxidized low carbon steel. The function of the produced inclusions on the formation of IAF was investigated in conjunction with determining the preferential cooling rates of the IAF formation and measuring the mechanical properties of hot-rolled samples.…”

“…In this way, Mg enlarges the supercooled austenite region and promotes bainite transformation. AF is considered to go through the same transformation mechanism to bainite, except that AF nucleates intragranularly on inclusions . The bainite content increased because of the lack of effective nucleus for AF nucleation in the sample Mg3.…”

“…The detailed description of the process is given in our previous studies. 12,13 The mechanical properties are as follows: yield strength 448 MPa (S1), 468 MPa (S2); tensile strength 545 MPa (S1), 566 MPa (S2); average transversal impact toughness (-40uC) 120 J (S1), 192 J (S2), which was reported in the previous paper. 11 Weld simulation was performed on a thermomechanical simulator to investigate impact toughness and microstructural evolution changes in CGHAZ among the two steels.…”
