Effect of Methanol extract of Musca domestica larva on some Enzymes and Haematological parameters in Trypanosoma brucei brucei - infected rats

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of methanol extract of Musca domestica (400mg/kg body weight) on some biomarker enzymes and haematological parameters in Trypanosoma brucei brucei -infected rats. Twenty albino rats were intraperitoneally infected with Trypanosoma brucei brucei and were grouped into five (5) groups of four (4) rats each. Group1 was set up as infected not treated (0.2ml normal saline/kg body weight), group 2 was treated with diaminazene aceturate (standard drug), group 3 as prophylactic treate… Show more

“…This study demonstrates that 10 mg/ml concentrations of methanol extract of hemolymph of S. argyrostoma larva significantly inhibited T. evansi organisms in vivo. Similar results were recorded by Shittu et al [26] using methanol extract of M. domestica larva. The observed inhibition may be an indication of the possible utility of the methanol extract of hemolymph of larva as an anti-trypanosomal agent.…”

“…Hepatic impairment is one of the complications of diabetes mellitus and its evident by elevation of serum transaminase and alkaline phosphatases activities. Therefore, evaluation of serum enzymes biomarker will provide reliable indicator of functional integrity of the liver as well as treatment outcome [40][41][42] in diabetic condition. In the present study, the elevated levels of serum aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities in diabetic untreated rats is an indication of plasma membrane and hepatic impairment, these will adversely hampered amino acid and carbohydrates metabolism and thus effect ATP production [43].…”

“…Evaluation of Biochemical parameters has been proven to be a reliable method of assessing the deleterious effect of substance or outcome of a particular treatment on the integrity of organs that would have been compromised in stress or disease condition [14][15][16][17][18]. Insect and its products have been proven to provide significant protective effect to organs particularly the liver and kidney during toxicant/stress or parasite induced damages in animals [19]. Propolis from honey bee has been reported for haematopoietic properties [20] and hepatocurative effect against CCL4 toxicant [21].…”
