Effect of mechanical alloying and annealing on the sintering behaviour of AstaloyCrL powders with SiC and carbon addition

Abstract: Alloying is one of the several effective ways of increasing the properties of iron-based PM materials. Modifying the chemical composition of AstaloyCrL powder by silicon addition offers subsequent, effective way of increasing the properties of iron-based PM materials. However, silicon has a high affinity for oxygen, therefore, its implementation is problematic during the sintering process of mixtured powders. In order to overcome this problem and to obtain a homogeneous composition of lowalloy steel with silic… Show more

“…In fact, during this process, the most significant changes or structural defects of material occur, e.g., fragmentation, homogenization and particle hardening [11]. The above-mentioned effects greatly influence the subsequent sintering process of the produced mixtures that may also be observed in Figs.…”

“…A further advantage of using this chemical element as an alloy addition is its low cost, which raises the competitiveness of steel [8]. However, there are certain requirements that must be fulfilled in order to achieve the expected results while producing materials containing silicon, e.g., due to its high affinity for oxygen, it is important to use a very pure protective atmosphere during sintering [11]. On the other hand, if the sintering process is carried out improperly, the addition of silicon may decrease the material's properties.…”

“…The DSC furnace was calibrated using melting temperatures of indium, tin, lead and zinc. The QMS was checked using calcium oxalate monohydrate (Fluka) [18,19]. For measurements, 20 mg of the dry sample was put into sealed aluminium pans with lids and heated at 5°C min -1 , from room temperature, to 550°C.…”

“…However, silicon has a high affinity for oxygen; therefore, its implementation is problematic during the sintering process of mixed powders. Mechanical alloying is the most useful process to obtain a combination of low-alloy steel with silicon carbide addition [7,8]. Moreover, the MA process allows to homogeneously introduce silicon to low-alloy Astaloy CrL steel [9].…”
