Effect of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) in Pulmonary Inflammation in Asthma Induced by House Dust Mite (HDM): Dosimetry Study

Abstract: Asthma is characterized by chronic inflammation in the airways. Several models have been proposed for the discovery of new therapies. Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is relatively new and effective, very low cost, with no side effects. However, there is still no consensus on the optimal dose to be used. In this sense, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the best dose in an experimental model of asthma induced by House Dust Mite (HDM). Balb/c mice received administration of 100 ug/animal HDM and L… Show more

“…Another study evaluated the effect of LLLT (wavelength of 660 nm, power of 100 mW, energy of 1/3/5/7.5 J) on chronic pulmonary inflammation in mouse model of asthma induced by house dust mite (HDM). 21 The LLLT was able to modulate the pulmonary inflammation by reducing the number of cells in BAL fluid and reducing the percentage of neutrophils, eosinophils and T lymphocytes. On the other hand, LLLT increased the level of IL-10 and reduced levels of IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13 in BAL fluid.…”

“…[ [108] , [109] , [110] ]. There are currently 90 published papers on PBM concerning “acute lung injury” [ 110 ] OR “pulmonary inflammation” [ 111 ] OR “lung inflammation” [ 109 ] OR “ARDS” [ 112 ] OR “lung oxidative stress” [ 113 ] OR “asthma” [ 114 ] many involving small animal models where it can be argued that light penetrates more easily than in humans. Because COVID-19 involves a “cytokine storm”, PBM delivered to the torso (chest and back) might not only allow some light to reach the lungs but might also reduce the systemic inflammation responsible for COVID-19 sepsis-like syndrome [ 115 ] and disseminated intravascular coagulation [ 116 ] that can be deadly [ 117 ].…”
