Effect of Liquid Impurities on Corrosion of Carbon Steel in Supercritical CO2

Abstract: The increasing urgency to mitigate global warming has driven many efforts to control green house gas emissions. One solution among many is carbon capture and storage. However, CO2 emitters are not necessarily in the close vicinity of potential geologic storage sites. In consequence CO2 will be transported from generation site to storage sites under high pressures. This will necessitate a network of pipelines gathering supercritical CO2 from diverse sources and transporting it through transmission lines to the … Show more

“…Such a process can be intermittent and unreliable during long term testing. To overcome this issue, Thodla et al [23] and Ayello et al [110] administered water droplets to the steel surface in-situ at high pressure to maintain conductivity. However, such a thick water film may not be wholly representative of the films encountered in a CO2…”

“…[110] A flush mounted probe was used with the electrodes mounted in an electrically insulated material with the cross-section exposed as the active surface. When the probe was polished, a flat surface was presented for condensation to occur on.…”

“…Elemental Cr induces a transition of the corrosion product from the crystalline to the amorphous state, which results in a denser corrosion scale and decreased susceptibility to localized corrosion [12]. As previously mentioned, the corrosion behavior of steel in a CO 2 environment is affected by H 2 O and O 2 impurities [13] and by the Cr content of the steel [14][15].…”

“…A number of studies have been 21 conducted on the subject of impurities and their corrosivity in the transport of CO 2 . It has been highlighted that the presence of free water in the CO 2 stream transported via the pipeline should be avoided [74,111,123,124,[170][171][172][173][174][175]. Some of those studies that evaluated the effects of H 2 O and other impurities on corrosion in different pipeline material are summarised in Table 5.…”
