Effect of lipoic acid combined with paclitaxel on breast cancer cells

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Breast cancer is the most common gynecologic tumor globally that threatens women's health. Lipoic acid is a type of antioxidant that can alleviate oxidative stress damage. Studies showed that lipoic acid could inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells in cervical cancer and colon cancer. This paper intends to explore the combined effect of lipoic acid and paclitaxel on breast cancer cells. Breast cancer MCF-7 cells were divided into four groups: control group, lipoic acid group, paclitaxel group, and … Show more

“…Therefore, we established a subcutaneous xenograft model of pancreatic cancer and found that α -LA had a potential antitumor effect, although the antitumor effect was not significant when combined with nab-PTX. Several studies also indicated that α -LA could sensitize lung cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents [54], promote synergistic antitumor effects [55], and inhibit breast cancer cell proliferation [56].…”

“…Previous studies showed that compounds with iron chelating properties may have significant impact in cancer metabolism and can be considered in chemotherapy (16,19). Recently we have shown, among other groups, that lipoic acid (LA) has inhibitory effect on MCF-7 cell viability and proliferation (24)(25)(26)(27), as well as on activity of pro-oncogenic phosphatases PTP1B and SHP2 (27). Lipoic acid is also known to has metal-chelating properties, which can be possible anticancer mechanism of LA action (28).…”

“…Once the cancer cells fall off, the free cancer cells can spread with the blood or lymph, forming a metastasis and endangering life. Breast cancer has become a common tumor that threatens women's physical and mental health [4]. Early detection and early diagnosis of breast cancer is the key to improve the efficacy [5].…”
