Effect of lansoprazole on DNA integrity of human spermatozoa and activity of seminal creatine kinase

Abstract: Although lansoprazole (brand name Prevacid) is a commonly used dug to manage various acid-related gastrointestinal diseases, little is known about its effects on human semen quality and sperm parameters. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of lansoprazole on DNA integrity of human spermatozoa and activity of seminal creatine kinase. DNA integrity of human spermatozoa was assessed by the Apo-Direct™ kit followed by flow cytometry. The activity of creatine kinase was measured by kinetic spectrophotometric m… Show more

“…It is well‐known that the spermatozoa require adequate amount of ATP to maintain its progressive cellular motion; therefore, such enzymatic activity is very crucial in the spermatozoa. Indeed, it has been shown that the activity of creatine kinase in human semen is four‐fold higher than that in serum (Asseo et al., 1981; Banihani & Khasawneh, 2020). Accordingly, a reduction in the activity of creatine kinase in semen may negatively influence the motility of spermatozoa, particularly the progressive one.…”

“…Nitric oxide is a gaseous signaling molecule synthesized naturally in the body by nitric oxide synthases [ 47 , 65 , 66 ]. It acts as a vasodilator, particularly for blood vessels and inner muscles, which consequently increases circulation in these tissues [ 67 ].…”
